Centre for Creative Self Expression Through the Arts
THE THERAPY OF EXPRESSING YOURSELF THROUGH THEATRE TECHNIQUES
Drama therapy is the intentional use of drama and/or theatre processes for therapy. It is a suitable for everyone and can be done in individual or group sessions. It is useful for anyone who wants to deepen their self-awareness or work on specific issue prevalent in their lives.
Drama therapy encourages Action. It uses techniques such as role-play and embodiment to help you connect to your authentic self. Within a safe and non-judgemental space, drama therapy is a creative outlet used to help you express yourself, and to encourage you to actively ‘play’ with your problems- infusing life, creativity, and even humour in the process.
Drama therapy works on the principal of giving you the opportunity for direct experience. It provides a space for you to tell your personal story, set goals, solve problems, express feelings, or just let things go. Changes in behaviour, skill-building, emotional and physical integration, personal growth and improvement in interpersonal relationships are all things that can be achieved through drama therapy.
You can find drama therapy used in a variety of different settings, such as well as hospitals, CLSC, shelters, prisons and schools.
DEVELOPMENTAL TRANSFORMATIONS (DVT)
DVT is a playful drama therapy method that primarily uses the body. It increases spontaneity and creativity, as well as improving your ability to relate with others. DVT is based on the principle that all life is unstable and instead of trying to create a false impression of stability, we practice going with the flow and adapting creatively to new situations. It can be done in individual or group sessions.
